Sidejack, no binding?

Postby MWaldorf » Sun Sep 12, 2010 12:15 pm

My wife found me an LP copy of The Ventures In Space, and while admiring the album art, I noticed something peculiar - Don Wilson's guitar has no binding on the body or neck!
It's definitely an early model, a sidejack and it has a flip mute. I wonder what the story was? I imagine it would make the guitar easy to identify if it were to ever pop up.

Here's a color photo from the same shoot.

Interesting and sharp observation Mel! Perhaps it's a transitional model...or a one-off rush job for Don, perhaps :?

Another speculation - Semie may have wanted to get some of the options on display by the band - And, you can easily distinguish Don's guitar from Nokie's with this subtle difference ...

Maybe the no-frills guitar started Don off on the wrong foot with Mosrite? "I can't get a wider neck, let alone binding on my guitar!" ;)

I wander if Don requested no binding since he was so use to the Jazzmaster being that way......
make the Mos' of it, choose the 'rite stuff.

I'm only guessing on this, but being that these were possibly their 'first'
Mosrites given to them, Don might of not been thinking how small the neck was at the time. He might of thought what Artie
had mentioned, thinking that the binding with the sharp edge was creating a smaller width on the neck. Therefore ordering
it w/o binding might give it a smoother feel. All Semie had to do was, not spend as much time with the neck...just my HO .

I think we're just talkin' prototype city with the Mosrites in these back cover photos. I don't know that any sidejack Ventures model went into production without binding. The vibromutes don't yet have the Mosrite logo. You'll also notice on the back of "WDR Vol. 2", that came out a few months after this, a close-up of Nokie's Mosrite where the angle of the fretboard at the base of the neck is not yet cut to match the angle of the neck pick-up.
