Ventures II pickup anatomized

Postby maxkat » Mon Jun 20, 2011 3:25 am

Hello Mosriteians,

I've anatomized my dead 1965 Ventures II (German Carve) pickup.
The construction is different from the pickups with pole pieces (great thread here: http://www.mosriteforum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=4319), as the two magnets are inside the bobbin (actually, they form the bobbin), separated with a small piece of maple. No potting, only a little glue, bobbin and coil held together with adhesive tape (paper).
Here's a picture:

Does somebody know the construction of a Ventures II slab body pickup? Perhaps the same as here, only with less windings?

Cheers, Max

Great! That looks like the blind-cover bass pickup I have. Are you gonna rewind it?

Thanks a lot, I've been wondering how these pickups differed from the pole piece pups. Any idea what kind of magnets those are? Also, What are the dimensions of the piece of maple?

Yeah, I'm going to rewind it, just waiting for the AWG43 wire...
The magnets seem to be the same as those of the pole piece pickups, segmented (10 segments each), 52mm long, 12mm high, 3mm thick. The maple block is 38mm x 12mm x 6mm.
Does somebody have an idea what's inside those 1989-92 pickups without polepieces and what's their resistance?
Cheers, Max

What was the strip of masking (?) tape in the right side of the first photo attached to? Did it wrap around the outer windings or the magnets?

That tape was wrapped around the outer winding, holding the coil together. The magnets have their own tape, the same kind (I did not remove that).

The wire has landed – 10,693 meter should suffice for more than one pickup...

Next step is to pimp a friend's old sewing machine...
