Just arrived ~ with projects on the bench

Postby Louie7 » Wed Nov 28, 2012 5:26 pm

Hi, I'm Louie7...I'm restoring two Mosrites.

A 1965 Ventures Mosrite guitar that I've owned since the mid 1980's - with alligator case. Original color unknown, but possibly white; currently green; soon to be CandyApple Red.

A 1965 Ventures Mosrite Bass that I've owned since the late 1990's - with alligator case. Has original CAR lacquer

I am currently removing the green paint from the guitar and will probably spend the winter focusing on the bass, and then refinish the guitar next summer.

Welcome aboard! I actually like the (daphne?) blue on the Mark I. But as it has been changed already I totally understand your decision to have a matching CAR set.

Hi Louie,
Welcome to the forum...I like the blue also, re: the CAR, I have just acquired one in CAR with paint cracks similar to the one you are restoring, not quite as pronounced but gives it great character. Have fun with your restorations, I highly recommend Bob @ Hallmark also, I need some parts from him too and will be sending him a Christmas list soon!

thanks everyone.... funny thing about that blue.... in person it's much more green. The fellow I bought from, who did the painting, called it 'Ford Sea Foam Green'. To me it's pretty much just turquoise. Either way it needed to be dealt with. Lot's of little boo boos and pecking.

I can't find the guy I bought it from now. But if I could I'd ask him just how the paint was applied. Because it's pretty weird. I'm removing it by wiping it down with cotton cloth and lacquer thinner. When I get the top layers of the blue off and come close to the layer of white underneath, I see the blue in drips and drabs and blobs, almost like it was poured on.

I'll try and get some pics of that. I've never seen anything similar in all the refins I've dealt with.

I had a 1960 Edsel that was "Seafoam Green"...if that's the color, it would be more of a light mint green.
