Help with serial number dating

Postby 4th Dimension » Fri Apr 19, 2013 5:55 pm

Evening all,

I'm looking to get some dates on 2 Combo serial numbers I have the opportunity to buy. I find it funny that they both need a little work and their serial numbers are eerily similar

H-0377
H-0733

It's like yin and yang here. One needs some body repair, the other needs a refret and a new tuner.

Any insight will help a lot!

Thanks.

Hi 4th Dimension...
I'll check the serial number on my Celebrity III, when I bought it from Gruhn back in the '80's, it was list listed as a '67, but I'm not sure if the III was made that early. I don't have the s/n with me, but will check it when I get back home Tuesday.

Sorry 4-D, just read Dave's reply and realized I replied re: a Celebrity, I also have a Combo, I'll give you the serial number Tues/Wed, mine is an excellent-mint Candy Apple Red '67 or '68, came with the original case, hang tags, Manual, extra spring w/tag, warranty card and white Mosrite strap and came out of Clovis, not far from Bakersfield.

as far as i know.. you cannot tell the year from the serial number.. (like someone said.. they'd make the serial number your birthday, your favorite numbers, or whatever you wanted it to be.

pot dating is the best way..

and somewhere in 66 they went from pickups with no ® after the logo - to pickups with a ® after the logo.

but the pots are your best bet for gettting close on the year

Thanks Dave!

The Combo I went with was H-0733. It was local and required the least amount of work between the 2. The other Combo required a total refret and was missing a tuner. I'll have to check my pots to get a proper date.

My Combo doesn't have a serial number stamped on the neck. So many inconsistencies with these guitars it seems!

Guitar has been drilled and plugged, I reset the vibrato, now to just buy an arm from Bob @ Hallmark and I'll be ready to get her up and running
