Re: Venture a Guess ?
Excellent point Danny. I'll have to measure that.

Re: Venture a Guess ?
Rather than drilled too shallow, it might only be threaded too shallow.

Re: Venture a Guess ?
It has been my opinion that the knobs were made to fit the Gibson switches that have a shorter lever than the standard Switchcraft switch. Rickenbacker uses the standard full length lever and so did Harmony, back in the '60s.
I've often seen Mosrites and Gretsches with knobs too short for the switch lever. If you put one of the Mosrite ones on a Gibson switch I think it will screw all the way down.

It may be that they used a 'through' tap to tap the hole rather then using a 'bottom' tap. That would explain why the threads are shallow.
I can't imagine they deliberately made the knob to not bottom out at the shank end.
Could the problem maybe indicate that the switch had been replaced at some point ?

Also can someone give me the exact thread size for the original. The Chinese made are metric threads as far as I can tell.

Re: Venture a Guess ?
Hi Dan,
the old American original switch tip I have here is 14mm long and 7mm think, and I think the thread may be metric (can't find a M4 screw or nut to make this safe, but it "looks" metric – however, it should match a switchcraft switch, and if those have an inch thread the tip will have one, too). The drill hole is 11mm deep.
The two bridge screws at original US-made Mosrites have a metric thread (M5, at least those I have: 1965 Ventures II slab body tremolo, 1972 Moseley tremolo, and 1989/90). The six saddle intonation screws and the polepiece screws in contrast have an inch thread...
Cheers, Max

Re: Venture a Guess ?
I've found in the past that when the same item is used for different threads, if you make the threads slightly shallow, They will thread onto either shaft, tighten down and not be a problem. I understand most may not want to do things that way, but it's either that scenario or end up with the threads of my choice as I don't plan to make several different thread patterns.
Here is a photo of the two I made a little while ago, they both together took less then 15 minutes total to make.
Notice they have the flat tops. .200" across, .550" long

Beautiful!
I will take mine to the hardware store to see what the threads are. I would think they are inch, but maybe not.

Mosrite switch tips are made of lathe turned brass then nickel plated, 8X32 threads.

Thank you Danny! It's great to know this. I'll make a note of it on the next update of my Celebrity site.
