Hey all!
First I wanted to thank you all for the kind words and support for the new Hallmark models. It is greatly appreciated. I wanted to post this link in case anyone has not seen it yet. It is very informative and clearly illustrates the differences in the various production years of the Mosrite Ventures models. I'm sure most of us know this stuff. but for those who don't, it is a one stop reference guide for this info. Now, if only sellers would do a little homework before listing items and showing their ignorance for all too see.

...well, as long as you remain critical when you read what the link says, even if it is interesting (which it is btw).
The writer of that link gives a good description of the ’63 sidejack Ventures model but then adds straight after that:

“The Ventures used this model in their January of 1965 gig” (???)

Well I dunno but, NOT if he is referring to the Pearl White ’65 ‘topjack’ models the Ventures gigged with...

The Ventures went to Japan twice in 1965. They did use the sidejacks for the January tour:


And they used the pearl topjacks for the July tour. Of course, I can't find a picture of those now.

Mel, thanks for pointing this out and you've even added a picture to illustrate your point. I remember this photo but have always thought it to be a publicity photo (...also for Mosrite guitars) of some sort; think of the Ventures' first album cover with guitars on the front that were never played by them.

Having said that, I'm sure there must be some pictures out there too of the Ventures in action with their '63 sidejacks during their JANUARY '65 concert in Japan. I'll see if I can find some on the internet.

Just a quick not on a record covers. Just because you see a guitar on the cover doesn't mean that is the very guitar that was used. They may be using that make but not that very guitar. Almost all of Chet's record covers had a guitar on it but it wasn't his even if he was holding it. During his Gretsch years(1955-1979) he only recorded with 2 or 3 guitars. His 55 closed top 1 of a kind 6120,9166-58 for maybe a year until he got his 6122-59. From that point on if it was an electric guitar it was his 1959 6122 CG. If there were any others they were few and very far between. Point is the cover doesn't mean that is what was used for that record.

Thank you Mr. Waldorf for spoiling me with those convincing pictures of '63 sidejacks in action during early in '65 because so far I haven't seen any before until now! Most pictures from that era usually portray the Ventures playing their '65 Pearl White topjacks, so this must be rare.

Mel, 1st off, thanks for posting those pix!! I have numerous black and whites of the Ventures in Japan.(remember the amp pix you posted for me?) The Ventures did play their 63's in early '65 and then gave/sold them in Japan so they did not have to take them home on a plane when they had plenty more to play/sell. I posted that link to stir conversation as well as give a guide to identifying the different production Mosrite Ventures Models and their years. You must always remember that Semie was always experimenting and built a lot of customs guitars, even in the production years. I am still trying to figure out the large logo Ventures that Iron Butterfly used on some filmed concerts! There is also a unique lower horn carve on a couple of early 64's that goes down almost flat from the pickguard to the carved area on the horn that I have only seen 2 examples of. That being said, my only purpose with that link is so everyone can have an understanding of the differences and ways to authenticate various years of Mosrite Ventures model at 1st sighting. There are always variations (but few and far between) and you have to be vigilant. Has anyone noticed Arties Celebrity on Ebay has single line Klusons that should only be on '63's or '64's. I believe them to be original to the guitar, but they were probably leftover NOS that Semie put on the guitar as they were only old tuners back when he built the guitar. I am rambling so I will sign out, but more to come!!

Hey John -
Not to get off message, but there are several of those '64s you speak of scattered throughout the Japanese git-porn rags. They seem to occur between serial numbers 0200 and 0400 without any logic, and who knows how many were made (let alone why). Garrett calls them the "ugly horn" model, and although I don't know the reason, the Japanese mags refer to them as the "glamorous" body.
