Mosrite Ventures Bass...1 pickup or 2?

Hey guys,

I'm a bass player that is new to this forum and have a question about what bass to buy. Single pick up or double? I want a 60's Ventures but have never had the opportunity to play one. I'm in a 60's cover band and will be using the bass on a few tunes. I'm concerned that the single pick up version might be too "muddy" of a sound for me and that I might like the sound of having a bridge pick up. Do these two pickup configerations sound similar or do they sound completely different? I won't be using the bass alot, but I would like to be able to get some "highs" if I need them. (Just my opinion) I have a '67 single pick-up Ventures and my friend has a '66 dual pick-up Ventures and we have played each other's bass on different occasions. The single pick-up has a nice, deep but muddy sound; whereas the dual pick-up is not only capable of duplicating that sound, it can deliver a crisp stacato tone as well. I guess it's up to you and what you're looking to play.

It will be a matter of choice, for whatever reason but I must agree with vetovideo. With dual pick-ups you get a much wider range of tones

Never played a two-pickup bass, (mine has a staggered single) but on guitars, especially with appropriate switching, multiple pickups provide multiple tone choices...

Bob Bogle did just fine with the one pickup model on the Ventures Live in Japan 65 album - plenty of punch and bite. The times I've played a dual pickup model, I've found myself using just the neck pickup because I prefer the tone. Really, it's like the P-bass / J-bass thing.

I have to agree with this. My single neck pickup 65 Ventures Model has a suprising amount of high end response. Maybe they changed the pickup windings for the later 2-pickup versions.
